We often have goals, ambitions, and dreams of achieving a better body, higher salary or bigger house. But do we have the right mindset to approach our goals? Usually, these thoughts and feelings approach us as the end of the year looms, and we start to think of a New Year resolutions and how we can better who we are. We make strict resolutions in January, and for the majority of us, February ends in us breaking them.
We find the temptation of staying in bed and hitting the snooze button much more appealing than waking up early and attacking our hectic lifestyle. Let’s face it, we start the year with great intentions, but trying to balance family, friends, and work can be overwhelming, and ultimately this is what leads to our New Year resolution setbacks.
The reason we give up on our goals is due to our perception of the work required to achieve them. You can’t control external factors and situations. However, you can change your approach to dealing with them.
Redirect your mindset! Are you a pessimist or an optimist?
Let’s take an example of an employee who works at McDonald’s. A pessimist would say that as a job they simply flip burgers, and work the tills for McDonald’s. Many may consider this to be a dead end job, am I right? However, an optimist may argue that they handle transactions for a multi-billion dollar organisation on a daily basis. Neither are lying – Do you see the difference? Everything we say, everything we do, relates directly to mindset and self-worth.
Use these helpful tips to inspire a change of mindset. They will fuel your forthcoming New Year resolutions and keep you motivated to achieve your highest potential.
If you learn one thing from reading this article – please make it this, and start now! Set yourself goals!
There is no better way to strengthen your mindset than knowing where you want to go and pushing yourself to get there. If you are not challenged by any career or personal projects, it is seriously time to reconsider your direction. You have reached this article because you want to strengthen your mindset, and for that reason I want you to consider this; if it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you!
I fully appreciate you lead a busy lifestyle, and it can be difficult to find the time to set yourself personal and professional goals. Let me ask you, what do you get up to on a Sunday evening? If the answer is ‘chill out’, ‘relax’, or ‘watch tv’, then you must consider using this time to organise your personal and professional life, and set goals along with an action list of how you will achieve them.
Write A Grateful List
Consumed by the 9 to 5 and in the midst of a busy lifestyle, we can often forget what we are grateful for, and the real reason we work so hard. Everyone has a reason for why they show up to work every single day – usually, it is something we are grateful for e.g. family. “According to research by UC Davis psychologist Robert Emmons, keeping a gratitude journal contributes to a positive life attitude, and makes us feel better, sleep better and even have stronger immune systems (success.com).”
It isn’t a long process so try it out today. Write a list of what you are most grateful for, update this list on a daily, if not weekly basis. Experience for yourself the shift in mindset that this simple task brings.
Understand Your Importance
As a sales and marketing professional, it surprises me the amount of people who do not understand their importance. Daily I see colleagues that fear to approach a manager, or are nervous about making a phone call to a client. This boils down to a fear of rejection. Far too often people put others on a ‘pedal stool’ and perceive that they have some sort of higher power, when in fact, this is never the case. Mostly, people want to talk, engage and find out more about you. You are a person just as much as they are and in fact, you probably get paid a little more too.
Make the client call, approach your manager, start valuing your importance and notice the impact this will have on your mindset.
Whatever you want to achieve, whatever industry you are in – pick the leading influencers and follow them daily. This way you can measure their activity against your own, analyze the results, and from this reassure yourself that you are doing the right thing and moving in the right direction.
Having the reassurance you are moving in the right direction can help you focus your mind and become more productive.
Make a commitment to yourself that you are going to achieve your goal. Write your goal down, this can be business or personal, it may even change regularly – whatever it is, just write it down. Make the goal SMART, and be sure to set a deadline of when you want to achieve it. When you have committed to achieving the goal you have set, create an action plan for the necessary work required to hit your target and smash your goal.
Telling yourself that you are committed to achieving that something you set out to is a great, and satisfying feeling. Now, your only worry is how you are going to achieve it? And guess what? The action plan you create will make sure you are going to achieve it.
